Our board Hildebrand is governed by a nine-person Board of Directors; the current Board is a diverse group of individuals dedicated to helping end family homelessness. The current Board Chair is the VP of Clinical Development at a local pharmaceutical company. The Board includes the current Pastor of the St. Paul AME Church in Cambridge (Hildebrand was founded in 1988 by St. Paul AME Church); a Client Relationship Manager at TD Bank; a principal in A&B Accounting, an accounting and financial management company; a commercial real estate developer; a former Mayor of Cambridge and Massachusetts State Senator; an urban planner; a Senior Community Partnerships & Development Specialist at Cambridge Trust Company; and a real estate development consultant. This diverse group of individuals provide governance and fiduciary oversight to Hildebrand, and also assist with fundraising.
Position Hildebrand is looking for Board members who are passionate about the issue of family homelessness, committed to Hildebrand's vision that every family has a home, dedicated to diversity and social justice, and connected to the community. Hildebrand partners with families experiencing homeless and provides shelter, permanent housing, comprehensive supportive services, and life skills development. Hildebrand operates 135 units of shelter for families experiencing homelessness along with 11 units of permanent housing and last year, helped over 1,000 individuals who were experiencing homelessness, over 600 of whom were children. Each family receives case management, supportive services, community resources, and housing search support until they are ready to move out of shelter and into permanent homes. Hildebrand’s Stabilization Services team then continues to work with the family for another two years, to ensure they stay stably housed. Hildebrand's Board of Directors provides mission-based leadership and strategic governance to the organization, and supports Hildebrand's staff and families to ensure that the mission and vision are realized for each and every family.

Where The Board used to meet at Hildebrand's offices at 614 Massachusetts Avenue, Cambridge but has been meeting virtually the past 18 months because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Commitment 1 to 3 hours/month
Donation Organization strives for 100% board giving, but have no strict guidelines around financial contributions.
Requirements Hildebrand is looking for Board members with a passion and commitment that reflect Hildebrand's mission of partnering with families experiencing homelessness. Community connections as well as interests in issues of affordable housing, children and youth, homelessness, and advocacy are highly desirable.

Board requirements include the following:

  • regular attendance and participation at meetings (Board meeting are held monthly and committee meeting schedules vary) and at the annual election of members and officers;

  • serve as a trusted advisor to the CEO as she develops and implements Hildebrand's strategic direction;

  • review the performance indicators as presented by the CEO and assist in evaluating impact and measuring performance of the organization's programs;

  • approve the annual budget, audit reports, and materials and participate in Board decision making as part of its fiduciary responsibility;

  • serve on committees or task forces and take on special assignments as needed;

  • represent Hildebrand to stakeholders and act as an ambassador for the organization;

  • ensure that Hildebrand's commitment to a diverse Board is fulfilled and that it reflects the communities served.

Additional Info Ideal candidates for Hildebrand's Board of Directors are individuals who demonstrate most of the following characteristics and experience:

  • leadership and experience in business, government, philanthropy, or nonprofit sectors;

  • a strong moral compass and who display qualities of integrity and passion for improving the lives of Hildebrand's clients;

  • a commitment to understanding the needs of the clients served by Hildebrand;

  • experience in affordable housing management or housing search would be beneficial;

  • consensus builders with experience working and/or living in diverse environments;

  • a natural affinity for cultivating relationships;

  • experience or commitment to govern as a Board for the good of Hildebrand.
