Potencia empowers adult immigrants to gain upward and economic mobility by democratizing access to personalized, affordable English language education. We train civic-minded volunteers—including college students, professionals, and community members—to provide one-on-one online tutoring sessions tailored to each learner’s goals. Learners pay $5 per session, with fee waivers available through community partnerships.

Since our founding in 2021, volunteers have contributed nearly 3,000 tutoring hours. We have intentionally pursued partnerships to expand access to English learning for immigrant communities who are often left out of traditional programs. In 2025, we partnered with the City of Boston Mayor’s Office for Immigrant Advancement to co-create a pilot program for newly arrived immigrants at emergency shelters to support stability and belonging. Moreover, we have been collaborating with workforce development organizations such as Asian Women for Health and JVS Boston to link English confidence and skills with career advancement. Our web platform enables us to streamline scheduling, simplify matching, and track impact, enabling personalized programs with minimal overhead.

Potencia is immigrant-led and community-rooted. Co-founders Amanda Wang and Jun Yoon are adult immigrants whose lived experiences navigating educational and language barriers shape our learner-centered, culturally humble approach. Our Board of Directors reflects diverse immigrant and professional backgrounds, ensuring decisions are informed by lived experience and responsive to community needs.
