Our mission

Freedom House transforms communities by developing the next generation of leaders through education, leadership development, and access to post-secondary pathways. We support high school students from Boston’s historically excluded neighborhoods as they work to succeed in school, pursue higher education, and build the skills and confidence needed to navigate adulthood.  Our work centers on educational equity, equipping young people to graduate, lead, and give back, strengthening their communities for generations to come.

About us

Founded in 1949 by social workers Muriel S. Snowden and Otto P. Snowden, Freedom House has long stood as a cornerstone for communities of color in Boston, providing education, technology access, and capacity-building programs across Dorchester, Roxbury, and Mattapan.

What began in a small office in the Old Humboldt Theatre Building quickly grew into a movement rooted in action. Early efforts focused on advocating for neighborhood improvement, expanding access to quality education, and fostering understanding and cooperation across racial, ethnic, and religious lines.

Today, Freedom House continues that legacy with a clear and unwavering commitment to equity and civic leadership. Through a holistic coaching model, we support high school and college students in achieving academic success while also creating safe, intentional spaces for dialogue around social issues, identity, and community.
