Board Member – Marketing/Events
|The Board of Directors will support the work of One Family and provide mission-based leadership and strategic governance. While day-to-day operations are led by One Family’s Executive Director, the Board-Executive Director relationship is a partnership, and the appropriate involvement of the Board is both critical and expected. The responsibilities of each Board Member include the following:
Leadership, Governance and Oversight
• Understand the mission and vision of One Family and remain well-informed of its goals, programs, services, strengths, and needs.
• Establish the strategic direction of the organization and serve as a trusted advisor to the Executive Director as she/he/they implement One Family’s strategic plan.
• Monitor One Family’s programs and services, reviewing outcomes and metrics created by One Family for evaluating its impact, using these to regularly measure its performance and effectiveness.
• Ensure strong financial management and fiscal oversight by reading One Family’s financial statements and audit reports and approving the annual budget, as well as being informed of and meeting all legal and fiduciary responsibilities.
• Support the Executive Director, contributing to her/his/their annual performance evaluation and if necessary, selecting a new Executive Director.
• Represent One Family to stakeholders, acting as an active advocate and ambassador for the organization and enhancing One Family’s public image.
• Help to identify personal connections that can benefit the organization’s reputational standing and influence public policy.
• Assist in identifying and recruiting new board members as needed; help to interview, orient, and mentor new board members when asked.
• Ensure One Family’s commitment to a diverse board and staff that reflects the communities One Family serves.
• Regularly participate in self-assessment of the board’s performance as the governing body of One Family.
Fundraising and Resource Development
• Serve as an ambassador for One Family and fully engage in fundraising in whatever ways are best suited to you to secure the financial resources and partnerships necessary for One Family to advance its mission.
• Consider One Family a philanthropic priority by giving a meaningful personal financial contribution on an annual basis that is commensurate with your capacity and ensures that One Family meets its expectation of one hundred percent of board members contributing.
• Help identify personal connections (potential individual donors, corporations and foundations), leverage networks and resources that can benefit the organization’s fundraising and resource development goals.
• Participate in and support One Family’s fundraising events and other projects during the year.
|We are looking for passionate and entrepreneurial individuals to support One Family’s plans for growth and scale, with a particular focus on expanding our network of supporters and other stakeholders. Desired areas of expertise for future Board members includes (but is not limited to) Diversity/Inclusion and Marketing/Communications. One Family seeks a marketing and communications board member who would partner with us to increase awareness and understanding of our work in preventing family homelessness.

|One Family's board meets quarterly. Meetings are held during the work week (typically Tuesday - Thursday) from 4 pm - 6:15 pm. Dates and meeting times are set well in advance based on board members' availability.
|All board meetings will be held virtually for the remainder of FY20 (through June 30, 2021) and possibly longer due to COVID-19. One Family's board will resume in-person meetings at One Family's Boston office only when it is safe to do so.
|1 to 3 hours/month
|We strive for 100% board giving, but have no strict guidelines around financial contributions.
|Board Terms and Participation
• Serve a three-year board term, with the possibility of reelection every three years, up to a maximum of three consecutive terms (nine years).
• Attend and actively participate in quarterly board meetings and prepare for meetings by reviewing the agenda and supporting materials prior to the meeting. If board members cannot attend a meeting in person, they should do their best to participate via telephone or video conference.
• Serve on at least one board committee, take on special assignments when asked and be available for consultation as needed.
|Orientation takes place over the first four to six weeks of the new board member's tenure, including:
- Review of mission/history/strategic priorities (Executive Director + Deputy Director)
- Meetings with senior leadership, by department, for more in-depth overviews of public policy, programs, and development & communications.
(All meetings are scheduled during "regular" business hours, and information is provided in advance of each meeting.)

- Board member job description + agreement (This information is initially shared with prospective board candidates during the recruitment phase)
- Schedule of board meetings for the current fiscal year
- Corporate documents (bylaws, conflict of interest, written information security program (WISP), and whistleblower policies)
- Staff and board bios (This information is also shared during the recruitment phase and available on One Family's website)
- List of committees and who serves on them
- List of major donors (and board member portfolios)
- Copy of Directors' and Officers' insurance policy
- Most recent audited financial statement, annual report, and board meeting minutes (Excluding board minutes, the rest of this information is available on One Family's website)
- One Family also asks each board member to provide a photo and brief bio for One Family's website
