Board Member – HR
Our board | As a Board member of LEAP for Education your job is to see that the organization is faithfully carrying out its purpose without extravagance or waste, and to oversee your Executive Director. With this position come two primary duties:
Board members may be asked to act as the liaison between LEAP FOR EDUCATION and its stakeholders which include its students and their families, schools, city and state government, the business community, funders/donors, community organizations, the low-income communities which it serves, its staff and the press. Leadership, governance and oversight
Board Terms/Participation Board Members will serve a three-year term and be eligible for re-appointment for one additional term. Regularly scheduled Board meetings will be held 6 times per year, special meetings of the board will be held as the board deems necessary, and board committees will meet approximately 6 times per year. Service on LEAP FOR EDUCATION’s Board of Directors is without remuneration. |

Position | We are looking for a Board member who has human resources experience with specific experience in driving diversity, equity and inclusion strategies. Experience in the following areas would be helpful:
We must have 100% giving participation from our Board to meet the expectations of our larger funders. Accordingly, we hope that everyone will meet a giving threshold of $1,000 if they can, or higher if they are able to do so. |

Requirements | This is an extraordinary opportunity for an individual who is passionate about education and LEAP FOR EDUCATION’s mission and who has a track record of board leadership. Selected Board Members will have achieved leadership stature in business, government, philanthropy, or the nonprofit sector. His/her accomplishments will allow him/her to attract other well-qualified, high-performing Board Members. Ideal candidates will have the following qualifications:

On-boarding | No formal onboarding. The Executive Director and Chair will meet with the new Board member to review (and answer questions on)the by-laws, current budget and strategic plan. The new member will receive contact information for the Board members and information on programs, enrollment and success metrics. When it is possible to visit in-person, the new member will be encouraged to visit programs to meet staff and students. The new Board member will meet with the Director of Development to understand our fundraising and marketing strategies. |

Additional Info | There is no HR person currently at LEAP. The duties are shared between the ED, the Deputy Director and the Accountant. We do not expect the Board member to perform daily operating tasks or to do any heavy lifting on developing policies or doing research. We want a strategic thinker, with deep HR experience who can provide strategic overview and direction. A goal is for LEAP's Board members, staff and students to be advocates for DEI in the community. There is no HR or DEI committee at this time although a task force will be established by the end of the year. This person would be a part of this task force as well as the Governance Committee and would attend Finance Committee meetings, as needed (e.g. if evaluating retirement plans for staff) A person of color in the position and/or someone who was the first in their family to go to college is preferred but not required. LEAP is financially secure with 8 months of operating cash in the bank. LEAP just completed a 3-year Strategic Plan with priorities in Sustainability, DEI, and Growth |
