Our board

The Forbes House Museum Board of Trustees is entrusted with supporting and advancing the museum’s mission. To do that effectively, trustees  typically fulfill many roles. Board members provide legal, financial and ethical oversight. They represent the museum in the community, raise funds, set strategy, work closely with the executive director and evaluate performance, monitor progress, and consistently serve in the best interests of the long-term vitality of the organization.

Position

The board is seeking candidates with financial, development, legal or architectural/building expertise to help us achieve our goals and fulfill our mission.

When The board meets quarterly, and also has an annual offsite meeting; frequency of additional committee meetings varies.

Commitment 3 to 5 hours/month
Donation Organization strives for 100% board giving, but have no strict guidelines around financial contributions.
Requirements

We ask all trustees to commit to these responsibilities to the best of their abilities. Training and skill development are available as needed to assist trustees in feeling comfortable with their roles.
• Understand and support the museum’s mission, policies, programs, and needs
• Prepare for, attend, and participate in at least two board meetings and the annual retreat/offsite meeting each fiscal year
• Make a financial contribution to the museum’s Annual Fund. While we ask trustees to consider making a minimum $1,000 gift yearly, what’s most important is having 100% trustee participation at a level that’s comfortable for each individual. 
• Actively participate in at least one committee (Administrative, Collections and Education, Development and Marketing, Nominating, Strategic Planning or other special committees)
• Attend, sponsor and/or purchase a table at the annual Keechong Dinner
• Attend at least two additional museum events each year, and invite/bring guests as appropriate
• Identify and help cultivate potential donors, members and/or event sponsors who can contribute to the museum’s fundraising goals

On-boarding

The museum's nominating committee develops and delivers an annual board orientation for new trustees, and provides additional training and skill development as needed.

Additional Info

The Forbes House Museum belonged to four generations of a family prominent in the 19th-century China Trade who were also generous philanthropists and avid collectors – a really engaging place with many stories to tell. Built in 1833, the Greek Revival home in Milton has been a house museum since 1964 and a National Historic Landmark since 1966.
