Our board | As a Board member of LEAP for Education your job is to see that the organization is faithfully carrying out its purpose without extravagance or waste, and to oversee your Executive Director. With this position come two primary duties: • Duty of Care – act with such care as an ordinarily prudent person would employ in your position • Duty of Loyalty – act in good faith and in a manner you reasonably believe is in the best interest of the organization Board members may be asked to act as the liaison between LEAP FOR EDUCATION and its stakeholders which include its students and their families, schools, city and state government, the business community, funders/donors, community organizations, the low-income communities which it serves, its staff and the press. Personal Responsibility: Board members must: • make a philosophical or emotional Commitment to the organization including a belief in the mission and vision of the organization. • attend at least 75% of Board and committee meetings and actively participate. • bring some special talent, skill, knowledge, contact or other contribution to the work of the Board. • read the organization’s materials, ask questions, listen to others, think things through, make suggestions, and express honest feelings • see themselves as facilitators for the organization, providing support to staff and other Board members. Leadership, governance and oversight • Review outcomes and metrics created for evaluating its impact • Approve annual budget, audit reports, and material business decisions; understand and meet all, legal and fiduciary responsibilities • Participate actively in a periodic strategic planning sessions and approve the strategic plan • Review policies and procedures and insurance coverage • Contribute to an annual performance evaluation of the ED • Participate in an annual self-evaluation to measure the Board’s performance and attend at least two Board Education sessions per year • Identify and recruit other Board Members • Ensure that board resolutions are carried out • Serve on committees or task forces and take on special assignments • Represent LEAP FOR EDUCATION to stakeholders • Ensure a diverse board and staff that reflects the communities LEAP FOR EDUCATION serves Fundraising and Marketing • Support, and participate in, the organization’s fundraising efforts and provide donor stewardship. • Be present at the Annual fundraising event. • Provide community outreach and be alert to community concerns Board Terms/Participation Board Members will serve a three-year term and be eligible for re-appointment for one additional term. Regularly scheduled Board meetings will be held 6 times per year, special meetings of the board will be held as the board deems necessary, and board committees will meet approximately 6 times per year. Service on LEAP FOR EDUCATION’s Board of Directors is without remuneration. |

Position | Looking for a Board member to provide expertise in the area of finance and who will serve on the finance committee. Finance committee members review and approve all major financial decisions and make recommendations to the Board. These would include reviewing the annual budget, audit results, approving loans, retirement plans, compensation plans, as examples |

Requirements | This is an extraordinary opportunity for an individual who is passionate about equitable access to quality education, closing the opportunity gap and LEAP FOR EDUCATION’s mission and who has a track record of board leadership. Selected Board Members will have achieved leadership stature in business, government, philanthropy, or the nonprofit sector. His/her accomplishments will allow him/her to attract other well-qualified, high-performing Board Members. Ideal candidates will have the following qualifications: • Extensive professional experience with significant accomplishments in business, government, social services, philanthropy, 6-12 education, higher education or provider of youth services to older youth. • A commitment to and understanding of LEAP FOR EDUCATION’s students • A commitment to the principles of diversity, equity and inclusion • Savvy diplomatic skills and a natural affinity for cultivating relationships and persuading, convening, facilitating, and building consensus among diverse individuals • Personal qualities of integrity, credibility, and a passion for improving the lives of LEAP FOR EDUCATION’s students • Ability and willingness to raise funds for LEAP FOR EDUCATION and to act as a spokesperson and advocate for the organization’s mission. • Attend trainings and represent the ED at events where s/he cannot be present We must have 100% giving participation from our Board to meet the expectations of our larger funders. Accordingly, we hope that everyone will meet a giving threshold of $1,000 if they can, or higher if they are able to do so. |

On-boarding | No formal onboarding. The Executive Director and Chair will meet with the new Board member to review (and answer questions on)the by-laws, current budget and strategic plan. The new member will receive contact information for the Board members and information on programs, enrollment and success metrics. When it is possible to visit in-person, the new member will be encouraged to visit programs to meet staff and students. The new Board member will meet with the Director of Development to understand our fundraising and marketing strategies. |
