The Student Clinic for Immigrant Justice (SCIJ) trains and mobilizes undergraduate students to provide free legal representation to asylum seekers and to organize for immigrant justice. As an innovative organization rethinking how society approaches immigration, Board Members have the opportunity to directly impact the future of immigration advocacy. SCIJ is seeking to add three additional Board Members over the next few months to join us in our mission. SCIJ is especially interested in adding one person with Executive Director experience and one person with accounting, bookkeeping, and/or financial management experience. SCIJ is also seeking people with experience in areas such as (but not limited to!) community organizing, legal advocacy, education, and fundraising.

Board Member Responsibilities

  • Supporting SCIJ’s mission, vision, and values.

  • Overseeing SCIJ’s compliance by reviewing and approving all relevant policies and programs; providing Board oversight to the implementation of policies and programs; attending to all matters of board governance; participating in the hiring and ongoing evaluation of SCIJ’s Executive Director; participating in the assessment of SCIJ’s impact; setting SCIJ's strategic goals and objectives; and keeping updated on the business of the organization.

  • Ensuring the financial well-being of SCIJ by actively participating in SCIJ’s budgeting process and supporting SCIJ in meeting its financial obligations.

  • Making an annual gift at a level that is significant for me. SCIJ has a $1,000 give/get policy meaning that Board members either personally donate or help raise $1,000 each year.

  • Raising money for SCIJ in whatever ways are best suited for me. This may include individual solicitation, helping with special events, writing mail appeals, identifying friends and associates who might be prospective donors or board members, and the like. There is no set amount of money that I must raise because I am making a good-faith agreement to do my best.

  • Committing to serving a 3-year term, renewable by board vote

  • Attending all 4 board meetings- and occasional others as needed- unless circumstances beyond my control prevent my attendance. I will read materials sent to me in advance of the board meetings and come prepared.

  • Promoting, supporting, and expanding SCIJ’s reach. This may include representing SCIJ to the community; inviting SCIJ staff to speak at meetings you attend such as with religious, professional, nonprofit, and community groups; helping to boost SCIJ’s media and social media presence; and attending SCIJ events, when relevant and able.

  • Working in good faith with my fellow board members and staff toward the achievement of the goals of the organization. Finding the right balance of being available to help and support the SCIJ Executive Director and staff, while not overburdening their time.

SCIJ Leadership’s Commitment to You

  • Ensuring you are provided with the resources to understand SCIJ’s mission, operations, policies, and finances so you are able to carry out your fiscal, legal, and ethical responsibilities.
Working collaboratively and respectfully with you toward achievement of our collective goals.

  • Providing you with timely notice and, if applicable, agendas and resources, for important events and meetings.

  • Supporting you in your professional and personal growth, such as development workshops, opportunities to practice new skill sets, and networking opportunities, where applicable.

  • Providing an open door to discuss SCIJ’s programs, goals, policies, and finances with the Executive Director and Board Members.

  • Fostering a welcoming, safe, and supportive environment.

  • Publicly recognizing and celebrating your work with the Board.
