Our board Agassiz Village, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit youth development organization, was established in 1935 as a 330 acre camp on Thompson Lake in Maine. Our mission is to prepare kids for life’s journey by providing an enriching and educational opportunity to economically disadvantaged children from Massachusetts to Maine. Agassiz has always served kids from the greater Boston area and in 2021 we have made a commitment to expand our reach and serve kids in and around Poland, Maine where our camp is located. We are currently seeking board members who have legal, marketing/PR/Communications, fundraising/resource development. Real-estate/Construction/Facilities, and/or Executive Management/Strategy/Planning experience. Our ideal candidate is passionate about Agassiz Village's mission to prepare kids for life’s journey by providing an enriching and educational summer camp opportunity that is transformative and impacts a child's entire future. They believe children are our future and are willing to invest their time and money to transform the lives of at-risk children whose families could never have afforded to send them to camp.
Position Agassiz Village is actively seeking new Board Members to help further our mission in support of at-risk kids and steer our organization toward a sustainable future by adopting sound, ethical, and legal governance and financial management policies, as well as by making sure we have adequate resources to advance our mission.

When 5 times per year, via video call, Wednesday evenings from 6-8pm in February, May, July, October and December. (Note: July meeting is in person in Maine)

Donation We strive for 100% board giving, but have no strict guidelines around financial contributions.
Requirements 1. Engage robustly in Five Agassiz Village Board meetings.
Meetings are held from 6 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday evenings in the months of February, May, October
and December. All meetings are held via video call except for one in person meeting in July held at Agassiz
Village in Poland, Maine.
2. Serve on at least one Board Committee or Task Force each year.
The Board conducts much of its work through committees and task forces. They include areas such as:
facilities, governance, finance, and engagement. These meet monthly or as needed.
3. Support Agassiz Village with a personal gift and help raise additional funds.
It is important that Agassiz Village have 100% participation in giving by its board members.
Board Giving Policy: Board members are expected to give an annual monetary gift to Agassiz
Village that is significant and meaningful to them and are asked to make Agassiz Village a priority in
their personal giving. Board members should aspire to give/get at the level of a major donor, which is
currently $5,000. Board members are expected to be involved in fundraising by using their personal and
business connections when appropriate, by soliciting funds when appropriate, by serving on
fundraising committees, and by attending fundraising events.
Most board members ask others to join them in supporting Agassiz Village. This helps expand the resources
available for providing services and grows the number of people who know and care about the organization.
4. Advocate and be an ambassador for Agassiz Village’s mission and vision.
As leaders of the organization, board members help recruit people and resources to achieve Agassiz
Village’s mission and ensure that at-risk children from Massachusetts and Maine have an opportunity to
attend our summer camp program. This can mean:
 Recruiting new volunteers and Board members.
 Inviting new people to learn more about Agassiz Village by attending a meeting or touring the camp in
Poland, ME
 Introduce new people to Agassiz Village by talking about our mission and objectives whenever possible.
 Visit the Agassiz Village camp or attend a special event to meet staff, campers and donors.
On-boarding Once new Board Members are voted onto the board, they receive a welcome email and a date for orientation will be set. Members of the governance committee meet with the new member and provide an overview of Agassiz Village and Board expectations. In addition, the new member receives a binder of orientation materials.
